1. Small Handy
The market has shown positive trends for small tonnages in the Pacific. Sources suggest that 10,000 MT of bagged rice has been fixed at a freight rate of approximately $34-$36 for a trip from Bangkok-HCM to Indonesia. Additionally, about 4,000 MT of scrap was reportedly fixed at around $20 per metric ton for a voyage from the Philippines to Vietnam. Furthermore, vessels ranging from 13,000 to 15,000 DWT are being chartered at rates around $5,500 for short trips within the region. Some operators are also seeking small tonnages in the Indian Ocean that can call at Iranian ports for period charters. This may signal a recovery in the Indian region in the near future, although cargo volumes remain limited at present.
2. Handysize
For the handysize segment, there was little fresh information this week, as sources remained mixed in the Continent-Mediterranean region. There appeared to be a slight correction from the South Atlantic, but new fixing details were scarce. According to reports, the vessel Nord Dubai (37,662 dwt 2021) open in Santos was fixed basis delivery Recalada, redelivery to West Central America at $28,500. The Avellaneda (34,391 dwt 2013) was fixed basis delivery Itaguai, trip to Portugal at $16,000 with Drydel. In Asia, limited fresh enquiry exerted downward pressure on rates. HMM was linked to the Lowlands Pelikaan (39,260 dwt 2015) fixing 2/3 laden legs with worldwide redelivery at $15,750, basis delivery Singapore. Vessels ranging from 28,000 to 32,000 DWT were exchanged at $10,000 for a trip within Southeast Asia and around $13,000 if redelivering on the West Coast of India.
3. Supramax
The supramax segment remained generally weak in both the Pacific and the Atlantic, with a lack of fresh demand last week. In the Atlantic, the M/V Georgios P (57,051 dwt 2010) was reportedly fixed basis delivery Malaga for a trip via the Russian Baltic, redelivery East Coast South America at $14,500. The M/V Pangeo (56,965 dwt 2009) was fixed basis delivery West Mediterranean on August 10th for a trip via Suez, redelivery Arabian Gulf at $20,000. Also, the M/V Tomini Unity (63,590 dwt 2010) open in Jorf Lasfar was reportedly fixed basis delivery Itaqui for a trip with redelivery to the US Gulf at $18,500. In the Pacific, the M/V Feng Hui Hai (63,261 dwt 2017) open in Jintang was heard to have been fixed for a trip with redelivery to Southeast Asia at $14,000. The M/V Placid Sea (55,604 dwt 2004) open in Cebu was fixed for a trip via the Philippines with nickel ore to China at $15,000 if south of Ningde, or $16,000 if north of Ningde.
