The Pacific market for smaller tonnages experienced a quieter week. Vessels ranging from 10,000 to 13,000 DWT were being considered for hire at mid USD 6,000 to low USD 7,000. A vessel of 11,000 DWT was fixed for a trip from Cebu to South China at mid USD 6,000. Additionally, a bagged rice cargo to Indonesia was fixed at mid USD 5,000 for a 10,000 DWT vessel open in ECI. Clinker cargoes from North Sulawesi to Malaysia, ranging from 6,000 to 7,000 MT, were offered with ideas in the low 20 pmt. This week, some charterers preferred time charters for PG-Japan range or round trip Korea-Russia routes. - Handysize
The Handy market remained relatively quiet last Friday, with limited activity recorded. The Baltic Handysize Index (BHSI) held steady at 707, while the average Time Charter Equivalent (7TC) settled at $12,730. In both the Continent and Mediterranean regions, sentiment was positional, with fixtures reflecting rates similar to previous levels. The South Atlantic outlook remained subdued due to an oversupply of tonnage and weak demand. Similarly, the U.S. Gulf saw little new momentum, further adding to the downward pressure in the already slow market.
A notable fixture was the Juliette (34,398 DWT, built 2012), which was open in Veracruz between 25th and 28th September. It was reported to be on subjects for a voyage from the Mississippi River to Venezuela, though further details have yet to emerge. In the Pacific, the market experienced a slower day, but owners remained patient, as rates indicated an upward trend. Charterers with prompt cargoes sought to secure coverage, leading to fixtures concluded slightly above previous levels.
For 28,000 DWT tonnage in the Pacific, rates were reported in the $8,000 to $9,000 range. However, in the Indian region, the lack of available cargoes continued to weigh on the market. - Supramax
The Supramax market remained stable last week, despite the holiday period in various Asian countries. In the Atlantic, the vessel Kallone (55,840 DWT, built 2007) open in the Caribbean was fixed for a trip from Wilmington to the Continent at $21,000. The Van Leopard (60,263 DWT, built 2015) was reportedly fixed basis delivery U.S. East Coast for a coal trip with redelivery in the Singapore-Japan range at $25,850. In Asia, the Observator (56,624 DWT, built 2012) was fixed basis delivery Durban for a China-bound voyage at $15,500 plus a $155,000 ballast bonus. Meanwhile, the Hyderabad (52,951 DWT, built 2004) open in Mumbai was fixed for a trip to China in the low/mid $11,000s range. The BBG Confidence (63,409 DWT, built 2018) open in Liloan was heard to be fixed for a nickel ore run via the Philippines with redelivery in China at $26,000.
