ASCENT BULK – DRYBULK MARKET COMMENTS/ WEEK 43-2024

1. Small Handy:

The market maintained a stable trajectory across the Pacific region this week. However, upcoming typhoon activity from the Philippines may impact fixture volumes and cargo levels in the coming days. Reports indicate that vessels with capacities between 10,000 MT to 13,000 MT are aiming for charter rates around $5,800 to $6,300. In Southeast Asia, rumors circulate that some urea parcels have been fixed at rates between $26 and $29 pmt.

2. Handysize:

Overall, the Handy market remained quiet with mixed sentiment across different regions. In the Continent and Mediterranean, the market held steady, with charter rates stable at previous levels. The US Gulf experienced minimal activity, and rates remained largely unchanged. The South Atlantic observed slight rate increases, reflecting steady support with minimal shifts in fundamentals. According to reports, MV Top Marine, 39,850 dwt, was fixed delivery Santa Marta for a coal trip to Spain at $15,000, while MV Seamaster, 36,962 dwt, was fixed delivery Sluiskil for a fertilizer trip to West Coast Mexico at $14,250. The Pacific market faces challenges from increasing open tonnage and a shortage of cargo, leading vessel owners to adjust expectations downward. Vessels in the 24,000-28,000 dwt range were fixed at mid $7,000 to mid $8,000, depending on their open positions, speed, and consumption, for intra-Pacific trips.

3. Supramax:

The Atlantic saw minimal improvement over the previous week. A Brazil-opened Ultramax was fixed for a trip to the Mediterranean at $23,000. In the Mediterranean, the MV Xin Hai Tong, 57,000 dwt, was reportedly rated at $20,000 for a trip from the Black Sea to Bangladesh. In Asia, the market held steady despite limited fresh inquiries. In Southeast Asia, a 56,000 dwt vessel open in Hong Kong was fixed at $12,500 for a trip via Indonesia to Xiamen. Charterers rated a 63,000 dwt vessel open in the Philippines at $17,000 for a coal trip from Muara Berau to North China. A 64,000 dwt vessel open in Singapore was rated at $18,000 for a coal trip to India. Meanwhile, a 56,000 dwt vessel open in Fangcheng was rated at $16,000 for a clinker trip to Bangladesh. The China/Far East market remained stable.
