ASCENT BULK – DRYBULK MARKET COMMENTS/ WEEK 50-2024

Supramax
The Atlantic remained less active throughout the week. A 57,000 DWT vessel was open in WARF and was rated at USD 13,500 for a trip to India with fertilizer. A 57,000 DWT open Marmara Sea was rated at $12,750 for a trip via the Black Sea to Bangladesh. In Asia, the market showed a significant drop and less activity on fresh enquiries. A 56,000 DWT open Singapore was fixed at $10,500 for a trip via Indo to CJK. Charterers rated a 53,000 DWT open Hong Kong at $6,000 for a trip via CamPha to South Philippines. The China/Feast market reported negatively in both cargo availability and hire rates. Charterers rated a 58,000 DWT at $7,500, delivering at CJK for a trip to Indonesia with general/break-bulk cargo. A 56,000 DWT open Bohai Bay was rated at $10,500 for a trip to PG. The Indian and PG markets remained weak with fewer cargoes being traded. A 64,000 DWT open in Mumbai was rated at $16,000 + 160,000 for a trip via RBCT to ECI. A 57,000 DWT vessel was fixed from PG to WCI at $10,000 with limestone to Mundra. A 58,000 DWT vessel was fixed in East Coast India at $7,000 for a trip to China with ore.

 

Handysize
The Handysize market continues to face a general downward trend, with varying regional dynamics influencing the current conditions. In the Atlantic, sentiment remains stable but positional, while the Continent sees reduced activity due to limited fresh scrap orders and weaker Russian demand. The Mediterranean market shows relative stability, and the South Atlantic appears balanced with minimal fluctuations. In contrast, the US Gulf faces challenges, with signs that trans-Atlantic shipments may be reaching a bottom. In Asia, a lack of new inquiries signals no imminent improvement, with rates holding steady at previously established levels. The 7TC average closed lower by $48, settling at $11,260.

In the Atlantic market, notable fixtures included the Bliss (35,278 DWT, 2007), fixed for delivery in Amsterdam for a scrap-laden trip to the East Mediterranean at rates between $7,500 and $9,000. A 36,000 DWT vessel, opening in Norway around December 16/17, secured a grain shipment from APS Lower Baltic to the West Mediterranean at $9,000. A large Handysize vessel was booked for a trip from the North Coast of South America to the East Mediterranean at rates in the low teens, though details remain limited.

In the Pacific, the Nesreena (32,778 DWT, 2009) was fixed for a trip within the Persian Gulf at $8,000, with no further specifics disclosed. A 34,000 DWT vessel is being considered for a salt shipment from Port Hedland to China at rates in the high $14,000 range. Meanwhile, a 37,000 DWT vessel, open in Japan, was fixed for a trip to Southeast Asia at $11,000, though additional details remain undisclosed.

Small Handy
Small tonnages in the Pacific improved compared to the previous week. Vessels with DWT from 5,000 to 7,000 were traded around high USD 10 per metric ton to low USD 30 per metric ton. A 7,000 DWT vessel was fixed with clinker in bulk from North Vietnam to Kuching at high USD 10 per metric ton. A 5,000 metric ton shipment of fertilizer in bags from Indonesia to Vietnam was exchanged at low USD 30 per metric ton. Additionally, 5,000 metric tons of fertilizer in bulk from Vietnam to Indonesia were traded at mid USD 20 per metric ton. An 18,000 DWT vessel was offered for a short period at mid USD 5,000 per day.
