SMALL HANDY: Last week, small tonnages in the Pacific market experienced a decrease as many charterers initiated their long holiday period, wrapping up year-end business activities. In the China/Far East range, 10,000-13,000 dwt vessels open in North China were rated around $4,500-$5,500 for a trip from China to the Southeast Asia range with intended general cargo. Brokers noted that hire rates in Southeast Asia were similar to the China/Far East range, with 10,000-13,000 dwt vessels in Southeast Asia rated around $4,500-$5,500, subject to speed and consumption for trips within the Pacific. Unfortunately, the market situation in the India range remains negative due to a lack of cargo, and prospects for improvement in the near future are uncertain.
HANDYSIZE: As the holiday season approaches, visible activity in the handy segment almost ground to a halt. Small pockets of positivity remained in the Atlantic, particularly across the Continent and the Mediterranean. However, levels of fresh enquiry were reported to have slowed down, with Charterers holding back after recent improvements. The Daiwan Leader (34,442, 2010) was rumored to have been fixed for a trip from Varna via Constantza with redelivery in Morocco, carrying grains at $16,500 to Baltnav, though others heard the rate was $16,000. Another 28,000 dwt vessel was rumored to have been fixed from the Black Sea to Morocco at $14,000. The South Atlantic and US Gulf also experienced a slowdown, with limited enquiry remaining for December dates. In the Asian markets, the conclusion of the week was relatively slow, with a 28,000 dwt vessel rated around $7,000-$8,000 for a trip within the Pacific and close to mid $8,000 for redelivery in India.
